Sunday Lunch - Nov 25th - The White Hart, Great Yeldham

Well, this was our last Sunday Lunch run of 2007 and it certainly became a memorable one, at least for Reg and Ronnie, if not for all of us; more of that later!

A grand turn-out of 18 members included Ron & Anita; Alan & Margaret; Les & Jean; Keith & Pam; Peter & Brenda; Jim & Sheila; Bernie & Tina; Reg & Ronnie and Linda & Eric, to complete a year of successful lunches at various eateries throughout Essex & Suffolk.

Again, we were blessed with fine weather and although the forecast was rain it did hold off during most of the day enabling us to reach our venue The White Hart in good time for lunch. Having said that Ron and Anita had apparently detoured through Clacton (or at least nearly!) en-route to the White Hart from Leigh-on-Sea resulting in almost a 30 minute delay before our table could order.

Ron claimed his Sat Nav was playing up and she wouldn’t emit verbal instructions after the third wrong turning but just kept looking at him from the passenger seat!

                Guess who’s STILL eating

However, once ensconced, we set to with the very ample menu selecting such delicacies as Pan fried Pigeon Breasts or Duo of Panned Brie & Goats Cheese followed by Lambs Liver & Lambs Kidney, Colne Valley Rack of Lamb or Pan Fried Sea bass.

The vegetables however failed to please, not only being rather miserly portions but also almost cold and rather burnt; appears charred veg is now fashionable it would seem?

Nice desserts including Pavlova; Lavender Crème Brulee & Home Grown Apple Crumble, followed; but how DO they Home Grow Apple Crumble?!

However, lunchtime conversation was mainly taken up discussing Reg’s unfortunate experience with his overheating XK8 during the drive up. The temperature gauge had hit red but after cool down and a water top up was OK for another mile before rushing up to the red again. We concluded Thermostat or Water Pump; both being Achilles heels of the earlier XK8 models.

Fortunately Reg had signed up to his AA renewal & soon the familiar Yellow van was outside and the mechanic diagnosed water pump failure and lack of cooling system pressure rise using a manometer on the header tank; clearly however a bigger job than he could complete in the White Hart car park!

Gone are the days when one’s changed the differential unit on a Morris Eight by the roadside!

So the breakdown truck was called and Reg & Ronnie’s P&J was unceremoniously driven onto the low loader to be taken to the Jaguar garage for repair; an unfortunate finale to an otherwise pleasant lunch, good company and a year of Area 33 Sunday Lunch runs.

See you all next year.
