Area 33 – Sunday Lunch April 27 - The Peldon Rose, Colchester Road

Linda and I arrived early having
enjoyed a brisk drive thru Goldhanger, Tolleshunt D’Arcy and Great
Wigborough along the B1026. A lovely series of bends, and short
straights brought back the pleasure of motoring on a sunny Sunday
morning again; some delays were experienced with cyclists and
motorcyclists en route but the XKR was easily pushed back up to the
national speed limit once these were passed. As we arrived around
11.40am we noted at least 5 other cars already parked and about 8
people queuing at the front door; seems like it’s a popular place. |
| We were soon
accompanied by Terry & Veronica; Alan & Margaret; Reg & Ronnie;
Peter & Brenda and Tina & Bernie as we went into the 15th century
inn minding our heads as we went through into the bar. The dining
area was laid with our reserved table and I noted that all other
tables were also reserved, clearly a busy pub; taking centre stage
the JDC group set to with our starters of Spinach & Goats Cheese,
Tempura of Shrimp & Soup de Jour; I must admit I was a little
disappointed that we had no Mersea Oysters to savour. However, main courses were also excellent with selections of Liver & Pancetta on Bubble & Squeak; Grilled Plaice or Skate; and Roast Beef and Lamb; all supported by a good wine selection at reasonable prices. |

| Needless to day, as is now
customary with our lunches, desserts just had to follow and
Parfait of Fruit was first choice along with Hot Cross Bun B&B
Pudding, Steamed Syrup Sponge and Brandy Crème Brulee.
This was the JDC Area 33’s first Sunday Lunch visit to The Peldon Rose but comments afterwards suggested it would be on next years list. |

However, as we had to vacate our table by 2.45 to enable a second sitting we were served coffee & tea in the adjacent lounge area; unfortunately when we mentioned the smell of calor gas we were informed that it was “the drains Sir!” So, although we left The Peldon Rose with memories of an excellent meal in good company it was not with the sweet smell of Roses but the lingering whiff of Greens!Jaguar transport included 4 XK’s, Terry’s XJS and Alan’s “Rolls” with two Bentley badges on the front (apologies for mislabelling it last time); one on the radiator and one on the bonnet. My Ford experience with cost reductions would have had that second badge deleted long ago; needless to say I never worked at Bentley! |
Thanks to all who turned out; see you next time.Eric HoilePS. I wasn’t going to mention Bernie again as he said he only had a cup of tea and a bun; but I saw him having two cups of tea at least; clearly a big spender! |
