JDC Area 33 – Sunday Lunch - June 24th

It was inevitable that at some time one of our Sunday Lunch runs would have to be cancelled due to lack of attendees.

This was to be our first visit to The Maybush at Waldringfield, Suffolk and it came with recommendations of good food and an excellent location on the river Deben. Booking is essential I was informed, so I did. However, with a “no show” at our June club night, I cancelled the provisional “Garden room for 18 persons” reservation I had made earlier but suggested to the publican that one or two may turn up.

Come Sunday morning my mobile phone was buzzing with calls and text messages “Is there a Sunday Lunch run today?” Of course I said, Linda and I are going, see you there.

So it was that six weather hardy Area 33 Members ventured forth in their Jaguars and found this haven of food. Traversing Suffolk country lanes getting more and more awash and the fact that we were heading towards “the river” brought back memories of visits to the Henny Swan and last months The Fox.

Although we arrived around 12 noon, the place was already half full and because I had cancelled our booking, no spare tables! Incredibly all tables were reserved except for The Terrace.

So, despite the rain we commandeered the high ground on the terrace under the largest awning, re-arranged all the tables and chairs and set up camp in the dry middle section around the supporting pole. With drinks and food ordered we were happy bunnies; in fact with two resident rabbits in the adjoining garden we were Eight Happy Bunnies!

Excellent meals selected from the daily chalk board included Cromer Crab, Lasagne (Inc vegetarian) and traditional Roast beef (masses of Beef & unfortunately masses of gravy – but this is near Essex!)

Black Forest Gateaux, a giant Lemon Sorbet and White Chocolate Cheese cake managed to fill the remaining crevices and we were well satisfied

Although Bernie doesn’t eat desserts I swear that’s a Lemon Sorbet in his hand!

By mid afternoon the place was packed and most remaining chairs on the terrace were also taken; so booking is ESSENTIAL!

Clearly this is an ideal summer location with great scenery and one to visit again.

Unfortunately the rain continued despite intermittent blue sky’s and prevented us taking a riverside walk; however it did allow us to have “another round of drinks, please”.

After a very satisfying lunch in excellent company it only remained for us to take our beloved companions home; together with our wives of course!

Remember, if you don’t want to sit outside, next time put your hands up!
