Area 33 – Sunday Lunch – October 25th - The Angel Inn, Stoke by Nayland

The Angel Inn at Stoke by Nayland was our forth new venue this year and it proved a bit of a hassle to say the least; however it all turned to gold in the end.
Having made provisional bookings as usual with the venue they then asked for pre-orders for such a large party! In addition due to such a “large party” they insisted on providing us with a set menu at a special price with the comment “you will not be disappointed”. I wondered what that could mean?
So, after some days of emailed menus between The Angel & myself I arrived at a suitable set menu which was tabled at club night for members to select.
Ten Area 33 members registered to attend at club night including Tony & Anthea; Peter & Brenda; Bernie & Tina; Reg & Ronnie and Eric & Linda all providing me with selections which I duly emailed to The Angel.
Later in the week, new member Richard phoned to confirm another two places but of course could not provide selected courses before Sunday; I confirmed the extra numbers with the Angel and advised they would select on the day.

Sunday weather turned out to be more than fine and finding our way to Stoke by Nayland was easy and the car park had ample places; so far so good.
Unfortunately Brenda could not make it on the day but Tony and Anthea brought guests Mas & Sam who arrived in a very well maintained Commer Imp Van!

Inside, the Angel appeared laid mainly for lunch, not a typical pub setting and soon the place was filling up with lunch time guests.
Our table was in the “Well Room” which turned out to be in the original part of the pub, judging by the beamed ceiling and antique style furnishings, and have a real well in the corner.
Would our wishes come true?

The starters of Chicken Liver pate and Tomato soup were nicely presented and were followed by roast Beef Sirloin; roast Lion of Pork and pave of Salmon.
Ample vegetables accompanied them all in a very satisfying main course.
Most of us plumped for Lemon Curd tart with mascarpone to complete an excellent lunch.
Tea and Coffee followed as we discussed Commer Imp Vans (yes!) and Jaguars, of course.

I think we all agreed that we were not disappointed as Delphine, the proprietor, had promised!

See you next time.
