Sunday Lunch-Mar 25th –Report

The Old Siege House, Colchester

This was the JDC Area 33’s first visit to The Old Siege House, although previous visits to The White Hart, Great Yeldham also one of Mason’s Group, suggested we could expect a fine lunch. Ample car parking for the nine Jaguars’ was available behind the venue and the sixteen of us ventured forth into the 15th century building. The interior was a nice mix of olde world charm with exposed beams, soft carpets and ornate wrought iron pointy back chairs that could have been conjured up by King Arthur’s Merlin.

We were led upstairs to our table which turned out to be a long one and not one of King Arthur’s round ones; clearly the waitress hadn’t recognised the similarity between King Arthur’s Knights & Jaguar Knights!

With our pre dinner drinks to relax us we poured over the ample menus trying to decide whether we really needed the three courses or could we stick at two. Deep fried Brie seemed to be a favourite starter and each piece was enormous; not to be outdone others selected the Pineapple, Crayfish and Rocket salad that was at least 18ins wide whilst I selected Shetland Isle mussels with cream jus; all excellent!

Main courses included the usual Roasts plus a Roast Beef and Pork mix for the hungry eater, Tortellini of Spinach & Ricotta or the Roast Lamb Chump. All very tasty it transpired. For those who had missed breakfast due to the 1 hour Summer time switch, there were ample puddings to choose from.

We had planned to visit Layer Marney Towers but unfortunately they had phoned me the Tuesday before to apologise for the fact that although they had confirmed our visit back in January, refurbishing work at the Towers was not complete and they would not be able to welcome us. It was 4pm by the time we had surfaced from our lunch and the lengthy bill paying process, so it was getting decidedly late to have ventured onto Layer Marney anyway.

The warm blue sky’s had remained throughout the day which enabled us to cruise home, some like Tony & Anthea and Keith & Pam with their tops down, having experienced another fine lunch among good company and with great cars.

See you next time.                                                                                                      Eric Hoile
