Area 33-Sunday Lunch – Sept 26th The Lion & Lamb, Little Canfield |
![]() |
The weather didn’t look
too inviting as we set out for the illusive Lion & Lamb on the
“Old A120”. Some got lost last year as many new maps only carry the New A120 road and the venue lies on the now renamed B1256. However, as we negotiated Chelmsford town traffic en route to the Bishop Stortford road who should pull alongside but Bernie & Tina to make a select Jaguar XKR convoy. Unfortunately that vision of a spirited drive along the A1060 on a quiet Sunday morning was completed dashed as Bernie & I pulled up behind two cars following a people carrier doing no more than 25mph. (I won’t say it was driven by a lady, but….) At last she pulled into a garage but not until we’d reached the Easters leaving only a few miles to clear the exhaust system! This slow motoring completely through my guestimate of the turn off through to Takeley and I just managed to see it as a Horsebox truck appeared in the distance. Having had enough of restricted driving I pulled a sharp right hand onto the country lane and away we went. Fortunately the Horsebox didn’t take our route so Bernie appeared in the rear view mirror as we headed for the Pub. |
| Along with Bernie &
Tina and Eric & Linda we met Peter & Brenda and Reg & Ronnie
as we parked our cars and made for the bar. We took our
aperitifs in the conservatory dining room and savoured the
menu. Two courses or three courses, too many decisions for a
Sunday morning; however, most went for a starter which left
the option of a pud for later. Nicely served Fried Squid with extra Chilli & Tartare sauces (what a nice waiter), Vegetable soup and Chicken goujons made up the very ample starters. Our main course selections included Roasts of Pork and nicely rare Rib of Beef or the fish selection of Herb Crusted Salmon; as portions were enormous pud selection was made very easy – none! However, Linda at least went for Syrup Sponge and Custard, whilst Ronnie settled for an extra glass of wine, very good choice. Coffee followed as the men talked about 20 inch scuffed wheels and tyres and Brenda admitted to deheading the flowers on Peters tomato plants….oops! Outside the rain had started so being gallant Jaguar drivers the men went for the cars, except Bernie of course who sent Tina! See you next time. Eric Hoile |
