JDC Area 33 – Sunday Lunch-Oct 21st-The Henny Swan

“The sun shines on the righteous” as the saying goes and JDC Area 33 is no exception.  Five Jaguars, plus Alan and Margaret’s beautiful Bentley Continental, negotiated Essex to the Suffolk border for a spot of fine dining at The Henny Swan.

The valley road between Bures, Lamarsh and Sudbury - which encompasses Henny Street and the Henny Swan - is one of the most picturesque routes in Essex and just right for a classic car run. Even Watery Lane, which last year was under six inches of water during our visit, was passable; except that Terry just had to confront a 4x4 midway; not sure who reversed up when they met but I noted that Terry’s XJR tyre sidewalls were not muddy!

Fine dining was the order of the day with an ala cart menu that included Grilled Avocado filled with Stilton & Walnuts; Grilled whole Sardines and Grilled Haloumi cheese wrapped in Parma ham.

An ample selection of mains included skewers of Scallops, Monkfish & Salmon; Roast loin of pork; Rib eye Steak with Wild Mushroom sauce and Roast beef & Yorkshire pud.

Desserts included Raspberry and Almond Tart; Fresh Fruit Pavlova & Whipped Cream and my favourite, Chocolate Brownie with a Chocolate Sauce & Whipped Cream - enormous!

Having gorged ourselves on lunch followed by coffee, with seconds; it was time to discuss things all Jaguar outside in the bright but cooling afternoon before wending our way south to watch Lewis Hamilton save England’s hopes of at least one win in a week of lost Football & lost Rugby.

However, as history now shows, despite being the underdog, a position Brits normally rally from, through a self inflicted wound from an unnecessary overtaking attempt of Alonso; Lewis was unable to lift England’s spirits even at the eleventh hour.

Oh well, there’s always next year; and another visit to The Henny Swan maybe.
