It was in at the deep end for
our Sunday Lunch run on February 24th to Grahams on the Green,
Writtle. Not only was it the first Sunday lunch run of 2008 but it was the first visit to this wine bar style restaurant for the Jaguar Drivers Club, Area 33; but I have a feeling it won’t be our last…... We kicked off with 19 Area members crowding into the new venue for this event; some members who shall remain nameless turned up in their daily drives but a hardy few dug out their prides and joy for the first outing of the year and magnificent they looked too. We’re still trying to figure out how Pam and Keith managed to slip their Healey 3000 under the wire into a Jaguar event; there will have to be a stewards’ inquiry into this in due course! However, Jaguar drivers included Larry in his XJS sporting a beautiful exhaust note, is that standard?, Terry & Veronica’s well presented XJS, a pair of XK8’s from Terry & Trish and Peter & Brenda plus Tony and Anthea in their E type and Eric & Linda in the XKR. Last but not least were Alan and Margaret gliding through in one of Alan’s Bentley Continentals; it definitely does look like a steward’s enquiry for both Keith and Alan! The owner Graham had also parked his recently purchased XK150 alongside the restaurant as a welcome sign for our club outing but had to leave before I was able to solicit his joining of Area 33 Club! |
| The meal was excellent
with most of us opting for the roast although Bernie being
Bernie had to opt for the Seafood Thermidor at an added
£6.00 supplement, but it did look fantastic with a mix of
monkfish, scampi, prawns & scallops in a rich thermidor
sauce, great! However, to salve the collective conscience a
few went for the vegetarian alternative. No such choice for
dessert – it was the full cholesterol onslaught or nothing. The final course was the collection of monies from everyone because the restaurant presented one bill for the whole table of 19; fortunately we had all elected to pay cash which made the job easier. However, despite collecting additional tips from everyone the final total was a little short due to Grahams adding the typical, but exact, 10% service charge. Thanks to all, offers came forward to resolve the discrepancy and we settled the account with pennies to spare! Although the mornings blue skies had unfortunately disappeared by the time we disgorged from Grahams on the Green we were able to enjoy a clear late afternoon run home to complete a very pleasant first for 2008.
