Area 33 – Sunday Lunch –The Chequers, Goldhanger

Goldhanger is a neat and pleasant village, at the head of a short creek, on the north side of the Blackwater estuary, 4 miles East North East of Maldon.

The Chequers Inn is situated In The Square close to the 11th century church of St Peters and is a centre for walkers who may park their cars in the pub car park, consequently it is always full if you arrive after 12 noon!

As it was on Sunday when ten Area 33 members arrived for lunch; these included Peter & Brenda, Reg & Ronnie, Terry & Trish, Terry & Veronica and Eric & Linda. The weather was glorious as we sat in the courtyard with a refreshing drink or two before taking our table in the busy dining area.

Choosing what to eat is not easy with both the table menu plus the daily blackboard choices available to whet ones appetite. Fish and seafood are of course popular but the variety offers something for everyone; so mussels, smoked salmon, soup and mushroom starters completed the first course.
Reg & Eric then went for whole Sea Bass, the Steak & Stout Pie for Terry & Veronica, Jerk Chicken for Terry and Chicken in mushroom sauce for Linda; all excellent choices.
What we all had not planned for was the enormous size of the portions and having had large portions of starters proved quite a challenge!
So much so that only Terry & Veronica managed to fit the sweet course in; a lesson learned was not to have a starter if you fancy a sweet!
In fact a starter and sweet would probably suffice most!
The discussion in the car park turned to Terry & Trish’s new XK Spectrum Blue Metallic Convertible. Apparently Ian Callum designed the New XK starting with the Convertible first followed by the Coupe; it certainly shows in the smoothness of lines, especially with the hood down, a definite improvement over the previous XK Convertible model.
See you next time.
