Area 33 June Sunday Lunch - The Axe & Compasses, Aythorpe Roding |
![]() |
We certainly picked a fine summers day for a country drive out to Aythorpe Roding, the location of The Axe & Compasses, and our second year to visit this establishment. |
| The pub was awarded
Best Traditional Pub of 2008 so it had to live up to
expectations. Peter & Brenda, Tina & Bernie, Terry & Trish and Eric & Linda took aperitifs in the garden whilst reviewing the menu selections. |
| The Axe & Compasses is located on the B184 Dunmow Road and consequently carries considerable traffic, even on a Sunday morning, breaking the otherwise peaceful location; but fortunately we had booked a table inside the restaurant for lunch. The starter’s included Chicken liver parfait with red onion remoulade, Terrine of Pork, Tempura king prawns and sweet chilli dip and Soup of the day; whilst the favourite main was roast Turkey with all the trimmings with others taking Topside of Beef or Stuffed Breast of Lamb. |

| The accolade
of Best Pub certainly could be applied to the food;
good quality, lots of it and nicely served.Tempting
desserts were available for those who could whilst
others satisfied themselves on a coffee only. Outside the chef was cooking on the barbecue for the crowd gathered to watch the wide screen TV in the garden and the England v Germany match; in hindsight it was fortunate that we only listened to the debacle on the radio as we drove home! In conclusion I would say Excellent Lunch but shame about the 3 o’clock entertainment! See you next time. Eric Hoile |
